The Story of PMG: From Small Beginnings to Recycling Industry Leaders
October 25, 2024 4:02 pmAt PMG, we are more than just a business; we are a legacy that began in 1990 with Pat and Bernie. What started as a mobile commercial vehicle repairs company has grown into a thriving Waste Management and Environmental Services operation. PMG is understandably proud to maintain a strong presence across the South West of England. Let’s take you on a journey through our history and show how our family-run business has evolved, expanded, and adapted over the years. We are passionate about being the market leading environmental brand PMG, synonymous with service across the recycling industry.
The Early Years
In 1990, Pat and Bernie McGuinness embarked on their entrepreneurial journey, founding PMG as a mobile commercial vehicle repairs company. Their dedication and hard work quickly paid off, and in 1996, they purchased a property at 38 Albert Road in St Phillips. This purchase marked a significant milestone, providing PMG with a permanent base of operations. The old buildings on the site were demolished, and a new three-bay workshop and office were constructed, laying the foundation for our future growth.
Venturing into Road Sweeping…
The year 2001 was a turning point when we invested in our first road sweeper. This opportunity that arose by chance, and we sure are glad that it did. This decision marked the beginning of our venture into road sweeping services, an area in which we have developed considerably. Over the years, we’ve reinvested in our fleet annually. Growing our capacity and improving our services with every new vehicle, we now hold circa 60 vehicles!
Expansion
By 2010, we were ready to expand our footprint, extending services to the Swindon area. This strategic move not only established a solid presence in Wiltshire, but also opened the doors to the Oxfordshire market. Our expansion into new regions demonstrated our commitment to growth and our ability to serve a broader customer base.
A Commitment to Sustainability: The Zero to Landfill Recycling Journey
In 2014, we took a significant step towards environmental responsibility by embarking on our zero to landfill journey. We constructed a tipping facility at our Albert Road site, dedicated to recycling and material recovery from Road Sweeping and Gully waste. Through this facility, we recover valuable materials like sand and stone from the waste. These products are then reused within the construction sector. Over the next 5-7 years, we continued to invest in creating a full waste management solution. Resulting in PMG becoming industry leaders in sustainable practices. Our commitment to sustainability not only sets us apart but also reflects our forward-thinking approach to business.
Looking Ahead: Exciting Times for PMG
At PMG, our commitment to growth and improvement is unwavering. In 2021 alone, we invested over £1 million in machinery and vehicles across the business. This high level of investment is not only about maintaining daily operations; rather, it’s about preparing for future growth and, in turn, ensuring that we remain at the forefront of the recycling industry.
As we look ahead, our focus remains steadfast on innovation, sustainability, and investment in both our people and technology. With a solid foundation in place and a dedicated team, we are well-positioned for continued success. Furthermore, as exciting developments unfold, we’re thrilled to share that behind the scenes, work is already underway on a brand-new home for PMG, set to open in 2025!
So, follow PMG on our LinkedIn page and stay tuned for updates on this project and other initiatives, as we reveal more details and share our progress in the coming months!
